How to Filter News (Category, Currency, Impact)

The News module's filter panel lets you narrow the event list to show only what is relevant to the instruments you trade. This article covers how to use each filter - Currency, Impact, Category, and Date - and how to combine them to build a focused daily or weekly view.

The Filter Panel

The filter panel sits on the left side of the News page. It contains four filtering sections: Date Range, Currencies, Impact, and Categories. All filters apply across both List View and Calendar View.

ℹ️ Note: Filters are additive. When you select multiple currencies and a specific impact level, the list shows events that match any of the selected currencies AND the selected impact level. Selecting no currencies shows events for all currencies in the default view.

Filtering by Date Range

The date range controls which time period the event list covers. You can either type a custom start and end date into the date fields at the top of the filter panel, or use one of the pre-built shortcuts below them.

💡 Tip: For your daily pre-session routine, set the date range to Today and filter for your watchlist currencies and High impact only. This gives you a focused view of the exact risk events that could affect your session without noise from other markets.

Filtering by Currency

The Currencies section shows a list of every currency for which event data is available. By default, EdgeFlo is designed to filter based on your watchlist currencies - showing you the events most likely to affect what you trade. You can manually override this by selecting specific currencies from the filter panel.

EdgeFlo News - Select Currencies

Selecting Currencies

  1. In the Currencies section of the filter panel, locate the currency you want to add. The list is alphabetical.
  2. Check the box next to the currency name. The event list updates immediately to include events for that currency.
  3. Repeat for any additional currencies you want to monitor. You can select as many as needed.

To select all currencies at once, click Select all next to the Currencies heading. This will select every currency available in EdgeFlo's data source. To clear all currency selections and return to the default view, deselect each currency or click Select all again to toggle them off.

⚠️ Watch out: If you select no currencies, the filter returns events for all currencies. This can produce a very long list, especially when the date range is set to This week or longer. Pair a broad date range with at least a currency filter to keep the list manageable.

Filtering by Impact Level

The Impact section lets you show only events that meet a certain market-moving threshold. The three levels are:

  • High - Major releases with the strongest potential to move markets (e.g. CPI, NFP, rate decisions).
  • Medium - Moderate releases that can affect market direction but typically produce less volatility than High events.
  • Low - Minor releases with limited expected market impact.

Selecting Impact Levels

Check or uncheck the boxes next to each impact level in the filter panel. You can select one, two, or all three. The event list updates in real time as you make selections.

EdgeFlo Impact

Example: Day-trader focusing on news avoidance: Set Impact to High only. This shows only the events most likely to cause sudden volatility - the events worth planning your session around. Filter to your watchlist currencies at the same time to cut out anything that does not affect your instruments directly.

💡 Tip: For most traders, watching High impact events only is all that is needed. You do not need to read every medium and low impact release. Focus on the events that matter, not the ones that fill up the list.

Filtering by Category

The Categories section lets you filter the event list by the type of economic data being released. This is useful if your strategy is sensitive to specific data categories - for example, if you focus on interest rate decisions and want to isolate those events from general inflation data.

Selecting Categories

  1. Scroll down to the Categories section in the filter panel.
  2. Check the box next to any category you want to include. Examples of available categories include: Consumer Price Index CPI, Core Inflation Rate, Calendar, Balance of Trade, Continuing Jobless Claims, and many others.
  3. The event list updates to show only events matching your selected categories. You can combine multiple categories in the same filter.
EdgeFlo News Categories

To show all categories again, click Select all in the Categories heading or uncheck your selections one by one.

ℹ️ Note: The Categories list is populated by the data source and includes all categories for which event data is available. Not every category will have events every day.

Combining Filters for a Focused View

The filters work together. The two most common combinations for daily trading are:

Pre-session setup (recommended starting point): Date range: Today - Currency: Your watchlist pairs (e.g. USD, EUR, GBP, JPY) - Impact: High only. This gives you a precise view of every high-impact event affecting your markets today - nothing more, nothing less.

Weekly planning: Date range: This week or Next week - Currency: Your watchlist pairs - Impact: High only. Use this in Calendar View to identify which days of the week carry major event risk and plan your position sizing and session times accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

My event list is empty after applying filters. What happened?

If the list is empty, the combination of filters you have applied has produced zero matching results. Common causes: a date range with no events for your selected currencies (e.g. a public holiday period), or a very specific Category filter with no matching events on that day. Try broadening the date range or removing the Category filter to confirm events are present, then re-apply your filters.

Do my filters also affect what the Block Trading feature monitors?

No. The Block Trading feature always monitors high-impact events for your pinned watchlist currencies, regardless of what is currently showing in the filtered event list. Your display filters and your block settings are independent.
