How to Auto-Split Large Orders

If your position size exceeds your broker's per-order lot limit, EdgeFlo can split the order into multiple child orders that execute together. This article explains how to place a split order, what the execution states mean, and how the position appears in your Open Positions table, Closed Positions table, and Trading Journal.

Most brokers cap the maximum lot size per individual order. If you want to open a position larger than that cap, you would normally have to place multiple separate orders manually. Auto-split handles this in a single action by breaking the position into child orders that execute together and appear as one aggregated entry across the platform.

How to place a split order

When your lot size exceeds the broker's per-order limit, a split option appears automatically in the trade panel. The exact presentation depends on which trade mode you are using.

Trade Sidebar (full panel)

When you enter a lot size above the broker cap, an info callout appears below the Lots field explaining the split breakdown. Two buttons appear below the callout:

  • Auto-Split: Place [X] orders - executes the full position as split child orders
  • Buy [X] lots - places only the maximum single-order amount and ignores the remainder

Press Auto-Split: Place [X] orders to proceed with the full position.

Quick Trade (expanded mode)

In the expanded Quick Trade panel, when your lot size triggers the cap, a line appears below the buy/sell button confirming the split will happen automatically: Will be auto-split (max 50/order). Pressing the button executes the full amount in one action.

How split orders appear in Open Positions

A split position appears in the Open Positions table as a single aggregated parent row. The parent row shows the total lot size, a weighted average entry price, and combined PnL. A number badge next to the size shows how many child orders make up the position.

Pressing the expand control on the parent row reveals the individual child rows, each with their own size, entry price, SL, TP, and PnL. Pressing it again collapses them back into the parent.

When you hover over the close button on the parent row, a tooltip confirms you are closing all child orders at once.

How split orders appear in Closed Positions

Closed split positions follow the same parent-row structure. The parent row shows the combined size, weighted average entry and exit price, and total PnL. A Sigma icon on the parent row indicates the value is aggregated across the split order. Expanding the row reveals each child order's individual record.

How split orders appear in the Trading Journal

A split order appears in the Journal as soon as the first child order closes, whether from a stop loss hit, take profit, or a manual close. The Journal entry shows the combined PnL of all closed child orders plus the floating PnL of any child orders still open, giving you a live view of the full position's health even when only partially closed.

The post-trade reflection modal fires only once all child orders in the split position are closed.

FAQ

How does EdgeFlo know my broker's lot limit?

The limit is read from your broker connection when you connect your account. EdgeFlo uses your actual account constraint rather than a fixed assumption, so it reflects your specific broker and account type.

Will I see the individual child orders in my journal?

The Journal shows the split order as one combined entry. You can expand it to see individual child records, but for reflection and performance analytics it is treated as a single trade.

Are there extra fees for split orders?

Each child order may incur its own commission or spread cost depending on your broker's pricing. This is determined by your broker, not EdgeFlo. Check your broker's fee schedule for the specifics.

Can I close individual child orders in a split position?

Yes. Expand the parent row in the Open Positions table and close child rows individually. The post-trade reflection modal will not appear until the last child order is closed.
