EdgeFlo supports metal instruments including Gold (XAUUSD), Silver (XAGUSD), and more through your connected broker. This article covers how the execution panel, risk calculator, and journal work for metals.
Metals are not Forex. The prices are larger, movements are measured in points rather than pips, and the position sizing logic is different. EdgeFlo adapts its execution panel, risk calculator, and journal to reflect this so that when you are trading gold, everything on screen makes sense for gold.
Supported Metal Instruments
EdgeFlo supports metal instruments like Gold (XAUUSD), Silver (XAGUSD), and more depending on what your connected broker offers. These appear in the Metals section of your watchlist, each showing its full name and a Metals category label.
If you cannot find a metal instrument in your watchlist, use the search bar and type the symbol or name. If it still does not appear, it may not be available on your current broker account. Contact EdgeFlo Support if you need help locating a specific instrument.
How Metal Prices Are Displayed
Metal prices are formatted to match how they actually trade, not in the five-decimal forex format. Gold and Silver use comma separators and two decimal places. This formatting applies in the watchlist, chart price axis, trade lines, and journal entries.
Opening a Trade on a Metal
Click on a metal instrument in your watchlist to load the chart, then click Trade to open the execution panel. The panel adapts for the instrument you selected.
Position size
The position size field for metals is labeled Lots. Enter the number of lots you want to trade, or let the risk calculator fill it in automatically based on your risk settings and stop loss.
Stop loss and take profit
Toggle between two input methods at the top of the SL/TP section:
- Price: Enter the exact price level where your SL or TP should trigger.
- Points: Enter how many points away from your entry the SL or TP should sit. The platform converts this to a price level automatically.
Tip: If you think in price levels when analyzing gold, use the Price method. If you calculate risk in terms of point movement, use the Points method. Both produce the same trade.
Risk calculator
Enter a stop loss and EdgeFlo calculates the correct lot size automatically based on your account balance, your risk percentage or fixed dollar amount, the distance between your entry and stop loss in points, and the point value of the instrument.
The lot size, dollar risk, and R:R ratio all appear in the panel before you confirm the trade.
Note: Metal position sizing uses the contract size and point value for that instrument, which differs from forex pip-based calculation. If a calculated lot size looks unexpected, check that your stop loss distance is entered in the correct unit: price or points, not pips.
Placing the Trade
Once your SL and TP are set and the lot size looks correct, the button at the bottom of the panel shows your full order details before you confirm. Click the button to send the order to your broker. The trade line appears on the chart immediately, showing your entry, stop loss, and take profit levels.

How Metal Trades Appear in the Journal
When a metal trade closes, it imports into your journal automatically with the correct labels for the asset:
- Instrument: Symbol, full name, and Metals category label
- Lot Size: The number of lots traded
- Entry and Exit Price: Formatted correctly for the instrument
- Session: Market Hours
- P&L: In your account currency, calculated from point movement and lot size
Trading Hours
Gold and Silver trade almost continuously throughout the week, with a short daily break. Check your broker's instrument specifications for exact schedule and holiday closures.
Warning: Spreads on metals often widen significantly around market open, close, and during major economic releases such as FOMC decisions, CPI, and NFP. If you have the News Block guardrail configured, it will apply to metal trades during these events.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my gold position size say Lots instead of ounces or contracts?
EdgeFlo uses Lots as the standard position size unit for metals, which matches how your broker and cTrader or MetaTrader express the position. The lot corresponds to a contract size defined by your broker. The risk calculator accounts for this when computing your dollar risk.
My calculated lot size for gold looks very different from my forex trades. Is that normal?
Yes. Gold's contract size and point value are different from a forex pair's pip value. The dollar risk amount should still match your setting. That is the number to verify, not the lot count itself.
Can I use One-Click Trading for metals?
Yes. One-Click Trading works the same way for metals as it does for forex. Your pre-set risk and the current stop distance calculate the lot size automatically. All guardrails still apply.
Does the News Block guardrail apply to metal trades?
Yes. If you have the News Block guardrail enabled and a high-impact event is scheduled that affects a metal you are trading, the trade button will gray out during the configured window.
What if I cannot find a metal instrument in my watchlist?
Use the search bar and type the symbol or name. Brokers sometimes use different naming conventions for the same instrument. If the instrument does not appear after searching, it may not be available through your current broker account. Contact EdgeFlo Support for help.
