MetaTrader Common Issues (Fixes)

Common MetaTrader connection errors and how to fix them. Covers invalid credentials, version mismatches, read-only password issues, server errors, broker problems, and reconnection steps.

Having trouble connecting your MetaTrader account to EdgeFlo? This article covers the most common MetaTrader connection errors, what they mean, and how to fix them.

EdgeFlo connects to your broker via MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 to import your trade history and sync live positions. Most connection issues are caused by incorrect credentials, version mismatches, or broker-side server problems. The error banner displayed in the app will tell you what went wrong.

Note: If your broker supports both MetaTrader and cTrader, we highly recommend connecting via cTrader. It is faster, more reliable, and avoids most of the sync issues associated with MetaTrader.

What You Need to Connect

Before attempting to connect, make sure you have the following information from your broker:

  • Your MT account number (this is a number, not your email address)
  • Your Master password (not the Investor or read-only password)
  • The correct broker server name
  • The correct MT version (MT4 or MT5)

Common MetaTrader Connection Errors

Invalid Credentials

This error means the login ID or password you entered does not match what your broker has on file.

How to fix:

  • Confirm you are entering your MT account number, not your email address.
  • Confirm you are using your Master password, not the Investor (read-only) password.
  • Check for extra spaces. If you copied your credentials from another app, hidden spaces can block the connection. Type the details manually if needed.

MetaTrader Version Mismatch

Your credentials are valid, but you selected the wrong MT version. If your account is an MT5 account and you selected MT4 in EdgeFlo (or vice versa), you will see this error.

How to fix:

  • Go back to the connection screen.
  • Select the correct version (MT4 or MT5) and reconnect.

Read-Only Password Detected

You connected using an Investor (read-only) password. This allows the app to view your account but not execute trades or access all data.

How to fix:

  • Reconnect using your Master password.
  • The Investor password field in your broker's platform is separate from the Master password. Do not confuse them.

Warning: If you continue using the Investor password, EdgeFlo will not be able to sync all your trades or enforce guardrails properly.

Broker Not Supported

The broker you are trying to connect via MetaTrader is not currently supported. Not all brokers are compatible with EdgeFlo's MetaTrader integration.

How to fix:

  • Check the list of supported brokers to confirm your broker is compatible.
  • If your broker offers cTrader, use that instead. cTrader connections work regardless of broker-specific MetaTrader limitations.

Broker Server Unavailable

Your credentials are correct, but your broker's server is not responding to connection requests. This is usually caused by broker-side maintenance or a temporary outage.

How to fix:

  • Wait 10 to 15 minutes and try again.
  • Check if your broker has announced any maintenance on their website or social media.
  • Do not repeatedly retry, as this can trigger rate limiting.

Server Not Found

EdgeFlo cannot locate the server name you entered. This is different from the server being unavailable - the server name itself is not resolving.

How to fix:

  • Check that you are using the correct server for the account type. Live accounts and Demo accounts use different server addresses.
  • Find the correct server name in MetaTrader under File > Open an Account or in the account confirmation email from your broker.
  • Make sure there are no typos in the server name field.

Connection Service Is Unstable

EdgeFlo's MetaTrader connection provider is experiencing temporary instability. This is not caused by your credentials or your broker.

How to fix:

  • Wait a few minutes and try again.
  • If the issue continues, switch to cTrader if available.

Connection Timed Out

The connection attempt did not complete within the expected time. This is usually caused by broker-side slowness or a network issue on your end.

How to fix:

  • Check your internet connection.
  • Wait a few minutes and try again on a stable connection.

Retries Temporarily Paused

EdgeFlo has paused connection attempts for 10 minutes to protect your account from broker-side rate limiting. Too many rapid retry attempts can trigger a temporary block from your broker's server.

How to fix:

  • Wait for the cooldown period to end, then try again.
  • Do not attempt to disconnect and reconnect repeatedly during this window.

Unable to Connect Right Now

An unexpected error occurred on EdgeFlo's connection service. This is a general service-side error, not a problem with your credentials.

How to fix:

  • Wait a few minutes and try again.
  • If it happens repeatedly, contact support.

Connection Failed

This is the general fallback error for credential verification failures that EdgeFlo cannot classify more specifically.

How to fix:

  • Check your login ID (should be your MT account number, not email).
  • Check your Master password (not Investor password).
  • Check the MT4 vs MT5 platform selection.
  • If all three are confirmed correct and the error persists, contact support.

Connection Lost (After Initial Setup)

If your broker connection was working and then suddenly shows "Disconnected" or "Connection lost," the most common cause is that your MetaTrader password was changed after the connection was established. This can happen because you changed it yourself, or because your broker forced a reset.

How to fix:

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations.
  2. Click Reconnect on your broker account.
  3. Enter your updated Master password.
  4. Your connection and sync will restore immediately.

Checking Your Connection Status

After connecting, you can verify your account status in Settings > Integrations. A connected account shows:

  • Broker type (MetaTrader or cTrader)
  • Account nickname
  • Last sync time
  • Status and health indicator

If the status shows a warning or disconnected state, use the error guidance above to identify and fix the issue.

Still Not Connecting?

If you have worked through the relevant error above and still cannot connect, contact support via Settings > Support. This gives the support team the information they need to investigate without back-and-forth.

If your broker supports cTrader, switching to the cTrader connection method is often faster and has fewer sync issues than MetaTrader. You can select cTrader from the Platform dropdown on the Connect Account screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

My broker works fine in MetaTrader but will not connect in EdgeFlo. Why?

The most common causes are: using the wrong MT version (MT4 vs MT5), entering the Investor password instead of the Master password, or hidden spaces in copied credentials. Double-check all three and try again. If the issue persists, try connecting via cTrader if your broker supports it.

My connection was working and now it is showing "Disconnected." What happened?

Your MetaTrader password was likely changed, either by you or forced by your broker. Go to Settings, find your connected account, and update the password. The connection will restore immediately.

Why does it say "retries paused"?

To protect your account, EdgeFlo stops repeated connection attempts for 10 minutes after several failures. This prevents your broker from blocking the connection. Wait for the cooldown and try again.

I connected my account but no trades are showing up.

Trades may take a few minutes to import after initial connection. Refresh the page after 2 to 3 minutes. If trades still do not appear, check your sync status in Settings. If the issue persists, contact support with your broker name and account type.

What is the difference between Master and Investor password?

The Master password gives full access to your trading account, allowing EdgeFlo to sync all trades and enforce guardrails. The Investor password is read-only and only allows viewing account data. Always use your Master password when connecting to EdgeFlo.
