Why MetaTrader accounts are slower than cTrader

If your MetaTrader (MT4/MT5) account feels slow to connect or update, this is not a bug. It is simply how MetaTrader works. This article explains why, and what you can expect.

You connected your MT4 or MT5 account and things feel slow. Trades are not showing up right away. The account seems to take a while to connect. Nothing looks broken, but nothing feels instant either.

This is normal. Here is why it happens.

cTrader vs MetaTrader: the key difference

Think of it like two different types of doors.

cTrader has an open door. EdgeFlo can connect to it directly, and your data flows through in real time.

MetaTrader has a locked door. There is no official way for EdgeFlo (or any external service) to connect to it directly. To get around this, EdgeFlo uses a middleman service that runs a MetaTrader terminal in the cloud on your behalf.

Every time EdgeFlo needs to read or update your MT account, the request has to travel through that extra step. That is where the delay comes from. It is not EdgeFlo. It is how MetaTrader is built.

What happens when you first connect your MT account

The very first connection takes the longest. EdgeFlo needs to set up a cloud terminal for your account, connect it to your broker, and download your trade history before anything shows up.

After the first setup, reconnections are faster. But MetaTrader accounts will always have a bit more lag than cTrader, because that extra step is always there.

Is there anything you can do?

If your account is still showing as connecting after 5 minutes, try this:

  1. Go to Settings in EdgeFlo
  2. Find your MT account and click Disconnect
  3. Reconnect the account and wait a few minutes

If that does not work, contact the support team and they will take a look.

If your broker offers cTrader as an option, connecting via cTrader will give you a noticeably faster experience.

Many brokers support both platforms, so it is worth checking your broker's account portal to see if cTrader is available.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a bug?

No. MetaTrader does not allow direct external connections. Every service that connects to MT4 or MT5 accounts faces the same limitation. It is not specific to EdgeFlo.

Will it always be this slow?

The first connection is the slowest. After that, it gets quicker. There will always be a small delay compared to cTrader, but day-to-day it should feel manageable once your account is set up.

My trades are not showing up. What should I do?

Give it a few minutes after connecting. If trades still have not appeared after 5 minutes, disconnect and reconnect your account from Settings. Still nothing? Reach out to support.

My broker only has MetaTrader. Am I missing out?

You will get the same journaling, analytics, and coaching features as everyone else. The only difference is a small delay between placing a trade and seeing it in EdgeFlo. Everything else works the same.
